Hi North 1! Ask away :)
Remember that these are only my opinions, talk to me if you don't agree with something, or ask others if my answer doesn't satisfy.
I don’t have any other questions in my inbox :S
haha I’ve never taken the ELPE, I have no clue!
It’s case writing - a lot of critical thinking, you’ll know if you’ve done a case before. Case writing is a delicate art, some people are naturally good at it and others need to work on it.
If you fail… you get to take it again next year! :D
Just know how to do all the calculations you did during each of the labs. It mostly asks about the concepts of each lab, sometimes for a balanced equation. I would say it’s the most straight forward one for sure.
anything academic.
no joke.
but seriously - course selection, program requirements, stuff like that
what’s a science competition?
um… check out iGem - you don’t get to do too much as a first year though. I’m not sure about other ones, I’ve never looked into them.
I’ll save this question for tomorrow night! it’s reaally good!
It’s scary, intimidating, but thrilling and exciting :)
Haha, this is a common interview question I have to answer. And this is how I always answer it:
I came into the Biotech/CA program with nothing to lose, right? I could always switch into Lifesci or Scibus if I didn’t want to stick with CA designation. But I went the accounting path for several reasons. I was getting much, much better marks in accounting courses than in science courses. The community feeling in SAF was incredible - I was involved in both student bodies and I just felt such a difference in the way upper years conducted themselves and really reached out to first years. I also found a lot more flexibility in career choices in the accounting route than in Science. I really like talking to people and working in a professional services area. Overall, I don’t think I had anything to doubt - CA it was!
ahh - I didn’t mean to worry you! I’m sorry if I did.
So KPMG has an event called Ace the Case - it’s an epic case competition, you’ll hear lots more about it at a future info session. It’s only for students who have not gone through the recruiting process yet - so that’s you first years! Last year, the session was sometime in late November and I (very luckily) made a good first impression (I think!).
And the rest was history. I remember getting a group interview email sometime in the first week of school in January, we went to the group interview, and the night before DECA provincials (so that’s Jan 21), I got the glorious email that I was one of the 8 students from Waterloo who were invited to the event.
At the end of the day, the information session was something SO MINOR but it got my foot in the door and made all the difference for me. I think only 3 or 4 students chosen for Ace the Case got offers from KPMG this past month… It’s important to make a good impression and to KEEP IT! :)
I’m sorry, I’m not entirely sure! However… why would you want to? The course load is heavy and you have to study for the UFE, which isn’t something easy :(
I’m sure if you paid extra, undergrad office would not say no. Your diploma would not be compensated or anything like that!
Alright - I think a lot of people are confused about this.
Kashif Memon works for the Faculty of Science. He is not the SAF advisor, but rather the Science and Business advisor (We should have gone over this in our SSP… but that’s okay). He is the academic advisor for all SciBus, biotech/econ, and biotech/CA students. What separates our program is that we are also a part of SAF, which means we can take any problems we have regarding our accounting courses to Donna or Carol.
